Speak up for Gaza

People in Gaza are suffering under constant bombardment and occupation by Israel’s military.

Tens of thousands of civilians have been killed. Humanitarian and medical workers have been deliberately targeted, along with journalists and other civilians. Famine has been declared in parts of Gaza and two million people are on the brink of starvation, as humanitarian aid is deliberately blocked by authorities in Israel.

Oxfam condemns all violence against civilians, including the atrocities committed by Hamas against people in Israel on 7 October 2023 and the subsequent escalation of violence on a horrific scale by the Israeli military against people in Gaza and the West Bank.

Before the latest escalation of violence, over 80% of the population in Gaza relied on some form of humanitarian aid for survival, and life in the Gaza Strip was characterised by the almost total restriction on travel and trade, and the absence of social safety nets and livelihood opportunities. Since the start of the war, life for the 2.3 million Palestinians trapped inside Gaza has turned into an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.

Add your name to this letter to Prime Minister Luxon and demand that New Zealand takes decisive action now to stop violence and breaches of international law. Because peace and justice for Palestinian people are possible.

Add your voice to the letter to Prime Minister Luxon

Dear Prime Minister Luxon,

I am horrified by the suffering of people in Gaza. It is heart-breaking that children and families are now facing famine, while lifesaving aid is ready and waiting to be distributed, only kilometres away.

Please do all you can to press the Government of Israel to declare an immediate ceasefire and urgently allow full access for humanitarian aid into Gaza. We must oppose any further killing, harm, or displacement of civilians. Anyone responsible for crimes against humanity must be held accountable under international law.

I hope you will stand on the right side of history and show New Zealand’s support for peace, justice and self-determination for the peoples of Palestine and Israel. The path to a lasting peace must begin with an end to the military occupation and blockade of the occupied Palestinian territories.

Sincerely,
